From the winter semester, the 3G rule will apply on the TUM campus in Garching.

A university spokesman emphasizes: "The most important requirement is health protection."

Garching

- The next semester at the Technical University (TUM) in Garching should take place on site again. The students want to finally come back to campus after three online semesters, and the university lecturers are also being called back. That is the specification of the Technical University of Munich. “We want students to meet their fellow students again and have direct contact with the lecturers,” says TUM spokesman Ulrich Meyer, “but it all depends on the development of the pandemic. The most important requirement is health protection. "

Keep your distance, masks and tests will be part of everyday university life, as will vaccination offers.

The 3G rule will also apply to universities from the coming semester, says TUM spokesman Ulrich Meyer.

Only those who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative are allowed inside.

"So far we could only appeal, now we can insist," says Meyer.

"A total of 1000 students were vaccinated"

At the beginning of August, a vaccination bus from the vaccination center in Unterschleißheim drove to the research site in order to make a low-threshold offer to those wishing to be vaccinated.

There was also a vaccination campaign at the TUM location in Munich.

“A total of 1,000 students were vaccinated,” says Meyer.

TUM hopes to be able to repeat this campaign "even if our foreign students return."

Not everything is offered in presence, but a great deal, emphasizes Meyer.

The possibility to work digitally and flexibly should remain where it makes sense.

The really big events should also be offered digitally, for example lectures that used to be attended by hundreds in the lecture hall.

"This also gives students the freedom to listen to a lecture several times or to pause a video and make notes."

No increase in dropouts

From October 1st, however, the focus will be on the interactive formats again, says Meyer, as well as the work in seminars and laboratories.

"All of them lack close contact and exchange on site, students and lecturers no longer want to sit alone in front of the computer."

Thanks to the rapid changeover to digital offers at the beginning of the pandemic, one was able to react flexibly and had very good experiences, emphasizes Meyer.

So far, the TU Munich has not noticed an increased rate of drop-outs.
