The National Agency for Mines in Colombia announced that 12 people were killed and another injured in an accidental explosion at an unlicensed coal mine.

And the French Press Agency quoted the agency as saying that the explosion was caused by a mixture of methane gas and coal dust, noting that about 60 percent of those killed in mining accidents this year fell in unlicensed mines.

Last year, Colombia recorded 171 deaths in mining accidents, compared to 82 the year before.

Colombia produced 48.4 million tons of coal last year, compared to 82.4 million tons in 2019, and it is the fifth coal producer in the world.
