Athens - Greece has announced stricter corona measures for unvaccinated people during leisure activities and at work.

As of Monday, September 13th, access to pubs, cafes or sports clubs will only be allowed to people who have either been fully vaccinated or who have survived infection, said Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias.

Corona in Greece: Numbers are increasing - "Pandemic of the unvaccinated"

This regulation does not (yet) apply to cinemas, theaters and museums in the country: Unvaccinated people will continue to be admitted here if they can present a negative corona test.

With the new measures, Athens wants to revive the vaccination campaign, which has been dragging along: Currently, more than 90 percent of the patients in the Greek intensive care units have not been vaccinated against the virus.

It is a "pandemic of the unvaccinated", explained the minister.

In Greece, the corona numbers have recently increased significantly again.

The seven-day incidence is over 200, and around 5,000 new infections were reported on Monday (August 24).

In particular, Crete and the southern Aegean with holiday islands such as Rhodes, Kos, Mykonos or Naxos are considered to be the germ of the corona spread due to the nightlife.

The German federal government has therefore classified it as a high-risk area *.

Greece: Corona tests no longer free

Corona tests, which were previously available free of charge, will be chargeable from September 13th.

In a country where the gross minimum wage is 650 euros, the price of ten euros per corona test should not be insignificant for many people.

And tourists (Corona rules of popular holiday countries *) should not be happy about this decision.

Greece: Government pulls corona measures - vaccination rate target of 80 percent

According to the minister, unvaccinated employees in the public and private sectors have to be tested for the coronavirus once or twice a week, depending on their occupation.

The same applies to students at universities and colleges.

Elementary and secondary school students receive free self-test kits.

According to official figures, around 5.6 million of Greece's 10.7 million people are fully vaccinated against the virus.

The government is aiming for a vaccination coverage of 80 percent.

The corona numbers are rising sharply again in many countries, and there is a mini lockdown on the Greek island of Crete.

Tourists have to accept severe restrictions *.
