Halle / Nebra - The tragic incident occurred during a photo shoot in a leopard enclosure.

A woman was bitten by a leopard and seriously injured.

The 36-year-old had to be brought to a special clinic with serious head injuries by rescue helicopter, said a police spokesman in Halle on Wednesday.

"Incident" in the leopard enclosure

The Burgenland district had already announced on Tuesday evening that a person was said to have been injured in an "incident" with a leopard.

At this point in time, no information was available about the exact course and severity of the injuries.

Leopard attacks woman during a photo shoot in the "senior citizens' residence for wild animals"

As the police said in the meantime, the woman was to be photographed with the leopard on Tuesday afternoon in a so-called "senior citizens' residence for wild animals" on an area near Nebra (Burgenlandkreis).

"Retired show stars are still enjoying applause," reads the website.

More than 350 animals from domestic animals to exotic animals live on the area - including two leopards.

How the leopard attacked the woman, who was probably a stranger to the animal, is still unclear, said the police spokesman.

The person responsible for the wild animal is being investigated on suspicion of negligent bodily harm.

It was also initially unclear who organized the photo shoot.

In Italy, a young police officer was attacked by a bear while taking a walk before going on duty.

The 24-year-old survived the attack with serious injuries.
