Erding - Too cold and too wet: Erdinger Natursaftkelterei Wolfra is assuming a rather weaker apple harvest on orchards this year.

The fruit can be delivered from September 9th.

Sebastian Grünwald, pomologist from Wolfra and himself an orchard grower, says: "On the one hand, due to the natural fluctuations in yield of the trees, a strong year is usually followed by a significantly weaker year." 2020 was good for the orchard. Wolfra pressed around 1.4 million liters of juice from around 1,800 tons of apples. Grünwald explains what will be a burden this year: “The weather is very difficult. Mostly cool and rainy days during flowering meant that many varieties were poorly pollinated. "

In addition, the high amounts of rain and the lack of sunlight would have caused a heavy fall in June.

This means that the trees separate from fruiting plants that they cannot feed adequately.

The trees therefore only produced a reduced amount of fruit.

“The heavy rain is actually good for the trees, but it becomes a problem in itself.

This year susceptible varieties are heavily infested with fungi, which results in a lot of rot, ”says Grünwald.

Another reason for a weaker harvest: “The trees in our orchards have been exposed to high climatic stress for years.

Night frosts in spring when blossoms have already started and increasing dry and hot periods in summer - this affects the trees and makes them fundamentally more susceptible to diseases and intensifies the natural alternation. "

The more frequent storms also affected the fruit harvest.

On June 22nd, for example, a heavy hail shower fell over several Lower Bavarian communities, which defoliated the trees and almost completely destroyed the fruit harvest there.

Grünwald emphasizes that the harvest forecast applies to both regions from which the press gets its apples: the area around Erding and the Rottal in Lower Bavaria.

A further complicating factor is that many orchards are outdated or are no longer well cared for and managed, explains Grünwald.

Wolfra has therefore been committed to planting and organic certifications, fair prices for farmers and the acceptance of fruit from very small farmers and private garden owners for many years.

Wolfra is also accepting apples from fruit growers and garden owners around Erding this year. The delivery is possible from Thursday, September 9th, directly to the winery in Aufhausen, Justus-von-Liebig-Straße 8. All opening times can be found on the Internet at www.wolfra.de. Managing Director Norbert Sima: “Our apple juice has always come from our region. That is just as important to us as it is to our customers. ”In addition, the large number of suppliers improves the quality of the juice. Its good taste results from the variety of apples and the different flavors they contain.
