A survey conducted by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups revealed that 45% of students are willing to be vaccinated against the new crown. Xu Xiaoman, the business director of the Youth Association, said on a program in Hong Kong and Taiwan this morning (25th) that students are less motivated to get injections during the summer vacation, and the school did not organize group vaccination. Changes may occur later. For example, students can increase their confidence when they see that their peers are safe after an injection.

Regarding the government’s announcement to extend the "same-day fundraising" arrangement to students aged 12 or above, Xu Xiaoman believes that it will be helpful to promote vaccination, especially for schools that are not able to arrange group vaccination, but it may not be very helpful to greatly increase the vaccination rate. From July 5 to 15 this year, the Youth Association interviewed 1,097 local secondary school students and 330 parents in the form of online questionnaires to learn about students’ campus life under the epidemic and their attitudes towards vaccination.

Students are afraid of injections due to side effects and medical care needs to be strengthened

Xu Xiaoman said that 80% of parents are willing to be vaccinated, and 60% of parents are willing to let their children get injections. She believes that the reason for the gap is that the government has only allowed young people to get injections for two months, and parents will inevitably worry.

Four-and-a-half of the students expressed their willingness to get an injection, but the main reason for their refusal was side effects.

She believes that medical staff's explanation of the side effects of the vaccine is very important and still needs to be promoted.

She also said that students who can be injected have reached the teenage stage, and families need to negotiate and talk. Parents generally respect their children's willingness to vaccinate and will not force them.

28% of the students said they had not decided whether to vaccinate, and held a wait-and-see attitude.

Xu Xiaoman pointed out that students have a low motivation for injections during the summer vacation, and the school does not hold group vaccination. Changes may occur after school starts. For example, students can increase their confidence by seeing that their peers are safe after injections.

She continued that students wishing to resume physical extracurricular activities need to wait and see whether the actual situation permits.
