Ramstein: Evacuated Afghans on the way to their new home

The US wants to have completed the evacuation mission in Kabul by August 31. Since Friday, refugees have been waiting for the last part of their journey to be sent to the US military base in Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Afghan evacuees have been landing at the US military base in Ramstein for days.

"We are grateful for our allies, including Germany ... who are working with us in this global effort," Major General William Taylor said on Friday.

The US evacuation flights had to be stopped briefly.

According to the US Department of Defense, the reason for this was that Qatar no longer had the capacity to handle the arrival of other travelers.

The evacuees were first brought there.

An Afghan woman gave birth to a baby shortly after fleeing Kabul - while she was still on board a US evacuation plane.

Her contractions and additional health complaints started on the way to the US base Ramstein in Germany, as the US Air Force transport command announced on Sunday.
