For the past three years, Williams has been chasing Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles, but already at Wimbledon she had to retire this year with a muscle problem in her right limb.

Hours after Serena's retirement announcement, Venus Williams, Serena's older sister, also stated that she would not be in New York due to a muscle injury in one of her legs that she has suffered from all summer.

Serena and Venus that join the list of high-profile tennis players missing the tournament, after defending champion Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal announced that they would not compete due to injuries.

This is the first time since 2003 that the Williams sisters will not play in New York and also the first time since 1997 that they will be absent alongside Federer and Nadal.

The US Open begins Monday, August 30 and ends on September 12.
