US President Joe Biden said tonight (Friday) that ISIS carried out the attack on Kabul airport, that the United States would "hunt" those responsible and that despite fears of further attacks, the evacuation of civilians from Afghanistan would continue.

"We will not be forgiven, we will not be forgotten. We will persecute you and make you pay," the president said in a statement issued by the White House.

More than 60 people, including ten American soldiers, were killed last night in a combined terror attack at a Kabul airport crowded with thousands of people, US and Afghan officials said, hours after warnings from Western nations of ISIS attacks in the shadow of chaos.

In recent days, thousands of foreign and local citizens have been flocking to Afghanistan trying to escape from the Taliban.

The Pentagon confirmed that among the dead and wounded were also American soldiers, but did not specify the number. The Associated Press reported that 12 American soldiers were killed in what appears to be one of the deadliest attacks the U.S. military has suffered in recent years. Another unknown number of soldiers were wounded, some seriously. Other foreign armies, including those of Britain, Germany and Turkey, said they had no casualties.

A Pentagon spokesman said it was a "complex" attack and at least two explosions took place in the compound - one near one of the entrance gates and the other at the entrance to a hotel where foreign nationals are staying. It is estimated that the attack was carried out by at least one ISIS suicide bomber. An exchange of fire was also reported at the scene and in the evening another explosion was reported, third in number.

A White House source said President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident and his meeting with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was postponed to an unknown date due to discussions he is holding with his advisers on the situation in Afghanistan.

A source close to the matter said there were no indications at the stage that Biden was planning to change the current withdrawal date, this coming Tuesday.

The Taliban has warned in recent days against extending the stay of foreign forces in the country.
