The turmoil in the Council of the Student Union of the University of Hong Kong triggered a discussion about what is going on in university education.
University education affects the success or failure of social development and the future. It not only accumulates high-level human capital for society, but also creates and disseminates new knowledge and technology, so that society can unite and cooperate in many aspects and make faster progress.
Therefore, judging the future of a country or society depends on the effectiveness of university education and the number of outstanding talents.
Although different universities have different characteristics and backgrounds, the society's expectations for university education should not be different: provide unlimited learning opportunities, broaden students' horizons and practical experience, enhance their resilience and creativity, and create life-long developmental subjects.
Zheng Yanxiang, an emeritus professor at the Education University of Hong Kong, who was the president of the Asia-Pacific Educational Research Association, talked with "Hong Kong 01", hoping to point the way for young people who are struggling after the anti-amendment turmoil and rekindle their hopes in life.
In Zheng Yanxiang's mind, the goal of the university can be summarized as "carrying on the past and opening up the future."
