Sudden death in sports hall | Forensic medicine says boys died of myocarditis without congenital heart disease

During the physical education class in school in March of the year before last, a Form 4 boy suddenly fainted with discomfort and was sent to hospital and died.

The Coroner's Inquiry continued today (26th) that the forensic doctor stated that the cause of death of the deceased was lymphocytic myocarditis, which was a "natural cause of death."

Although doctors do not recommend strenuous exercise for patients with myocarditis, because exercise affects the healing of heart cells, there is no literature that exercises can increase arrhythmia or even cause death.

The deceased Xiao Yetao, (19 years old, Form 4 student), was jogging at the Sports Hall in Shing Mun Valley Park on March 18 of the previous year. After a few minutes, Xiao felt unwell and fainted and was sent to hospital for emergency treatment.

The coroner He Junyao and five jurors dealt with it. It is expected that it will take 5 days of inquiries. The Lu Mingcai Middle School where Xiao Sheng attended was listed as the interested party and represented by the barrister Tan Junjie.

The doctor said or unfortunately suffered from myocarditis twice

Wu Bin, a doctor in the Accident and Emergency Department of Renji Hospital, confessed that Xiao fainted and was sent to hospital in June 2018. Wu decided that he should stay in the hospital.

Xiao was found to have high enzyme levels, but because Xiao only said that he "tighten the balloon" before fainting and felt uncomfortable in his chest, but he had no symptoms of fever or cold, so it was not certain that Xiao had myocarditis.

Most of myocarditis will recover within 1 to 2 months. Therefore, Xiao fainted in 2018 and fell to the ground on the day of the incident. It may be an independent incident.

Xiao did not have structural or congenital heart disease

Lin Baitong, a forensic physician at the Department of Health, confessed that Xiao had no structural or congenital heart disease and his death was due to lymphocytic myocarditis, which was a "natural cause of death."

After Lin's examination, it was found that Xiao's body had lymphocyte infiltration and heart cell necrosis, which was consistent with lymphocytic myocarditis.

The causes of myocarditis are mainly divided into three categories, namely viral infection, autoimmune disorders or drug-induced.

And when lymphocytes come into contact with heart muscle cells, it causes inflammation and then necrosis of the heart cells.

Exercise affects heart cell healing

Regarding whether exercise will cause death in patients with myocarditis, Lin pointed out that myocarditis may cause fatal arrhythmia, and then suddenly faint or die.

According to related literature, strenuous exercise is not recommended for patients with myocarditis, but only because exercise has a negative impact on the healing of heart cells. There is no literature that exercises can cause arrhythmia or even death.
