Not only were the classroom classes canceled due to Corona, boys and girls were also unable to attend swimming courses.

A shortcoming that can be life-threatening.

The SPD therefore submitted an application to the local council for free swimming and corresponding lessons during the holidays.

This has not yet been fully implemented, but a lot has happened.

  • The SPD parliamentary group in the Garmisch-Partenkirchner municipal council submitted an application for free swimming and corresponding lessons during the holidays.

  • The problem was also recognized by the water guards.

  • The BRK district association plans to offer 20 courses per year from September.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

- There weren't many swimming days in this changeable summer this year.

After a rainy spring, the days above 25 degrees were few and far between.

A circumstance that is not very pleasant at first glance.

But maybe even indirectly a stroke of luck.

Because of the corona, many children not only had to stay at home from school, study at home, the swimming courses for girls and boys also fell flat.

And safe movement in the water is an important prerequisite for a carefree summer for all age groups.

A shortcoming that the Garmisch-Partenkirchner SPD picked up - and introduced as a proposal to the local council.

In it, the parliamentary group called for free swimming for children in the pools, but also for lessons during the summer holidays.

"The application was made because it is vital that children and young people learn to swim," emphasized the deputy parliamentary group leader Kathrin Rotter-Heinle.

Times shoveled free

At first, due to the workload of the skilled workers, it did not look good that the municipal utilities would be able to offer courses in the wave pool at all during the holidays.

Only then should they start again.

But second mayor Claudia Zolk (CSB) also got involved, contacted plant manager Wodan Lichtmeß.

With success.

"He has shoveled free time, and the offer is very well received."

This is confirmed by Marianne Bauer, head of the ice rink and Alpspitz wave pool. “We had a lot of inquiries.” There were even waiting lists that had to be worked through. Parents were called to see if a swimming course was still an option for them. Many received positive feedback. Two units were finally offered, each lasting 14 days. Further courses are already available until after the holidays. The staff work in additional shifts to meet the high demand.

The problem was also recognized by the water guards.

According to Florian Credé, deputy chairman of the district water watch, additional teachers have been trained to support swimming lessons.

The BRK district association is also planning to offer 20 courses per year from September, which will also take place in outdoor swimming pools with appropriate swimming suits in summer.

There should also be offers for socially disadvantaged families with less income.

You can already register for the first course.

Information on this is available on the Internet at www.brk-gap.de/schwimmkurse.

Contact point youth center

Families who cannot afford a course for the children currently have the option of contacting the youth center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A needs analysis is currently being carried out there to enable these children to receive free lessons. In addition, boys and girls can use the Kainzenbad without admission during the summer holidays. An action that the market finances. "He bears all the costs that arise here," emphasizes press spokeswoman Silvia Buyer-Schropp. A deficit that the community is happy to bear.

The Bavarian government is also doing something and promoting the acquisition of the early swimmer badge.

Preschoolers and first graders should therefore receive a voucher of 50 euros on their first day of school to purchase the seahorse.

"As a subsidy for the course fees," emphasized a ministry spokeswoman.

Offers like these are important in order to compensate for the almost two years of absence from classes.

This is underlined immediately by the Water Rescue Service, Credé: "In our lakes and rivers in particular, it is very dangerous if you cannot swim."
