Many shops are closing, making room for something new - and a wistful farewell is also soon to come at Stachus.
Munich - Jeweler Hager, previously located at Karlsplatz 8, will soon have to say goodbye to its customers.
After half a century, the store will close at the end of the year.
Johanna Hager is the tenant of the jewelry store with a view of the Stachus fountain.
She has worked here for 27 years - now in the third generation.
Now it says “Total clearance sale due to business closure” on the sign on their shop window under the arcades.
Johanna Hager has reached retirement age.
"Now I want to slowly enjoy my retirement," she says.
Munich: Jeweler at Stachus closes
The Corona * pandemic ultimately confirmed her decision.
“At the beginning of the pandemic, we first thought: We can do it all!
Let's have a look. ”The first lockdown made her come halfway well.
The bridging aid from the state was paid out immediately.
"In the first wave, they didn't even ask about our costs, they simply provided a lump sum."
The second lockdown made it much more difficult to get help.
There was a lot of bureaucracy.
"With the so-called bridging aids, it was said that they cover all costs," says Johanna Hager.
"But not true.
That was only a small part of it.
You had to pay extra for everything privately. ”Salaries had to keep running, rent, electricity and water paid.
She only got part of the sum, says the art historian.
And: "In the end it was too laborious because you have to fight with the state for every euro."

"The city of Munich is getting a new face."
Now, with the jewelry shop, another small business era in Munich's prime location is coming to an end. In Johanna Hager's eyes, this is just one example of many: there is currently a great change in the whole city. Just like at Karstadt Sports: The shop that was Hager's direct neighbor for many years has disappeared - as have many other shops and restaurants that have had to close in the meantime. Hager: “You could say: the city of Munich is getting a new face.” But one thing is already certain: the successor to Hager jeweler will also be from the industry.

Corona, rental madness and online competition - the lights are going out in more and more shops in Munich. In the old town the list is long. The local economy is suffering from the consequences of the corona pandemic. The Hotel Königshof at the Stachus is currently being rebuilt. When it reopens, a new operator will be in charge. This is what the Geisel family wants, who have owned the house since 1938.
