The suffering of the people in the Ahr valley is hard to imagine.

That is why the Kolping family decided to help with a fundraising campaign in Walporzheim.

Wolfratshausen

- The flood came suddenly and swept everything with it.

The pictures of the flood disaster in the Ahr valley hit Alexander Hummel hard.

The Wolfratshauser has relatives in the small town of Walporzheim, two of his cousins live there.

The 43-year-old wants to support the victims in Rhineland-Palatinate - and together with the Wolfratshausen Kolping family he started a fundraising campaign.

The money is intended to help the people in the wine town of Walporzheim, a district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, to rebuild a life after the flood.

We have already raised 25,000 euros.

The Kolping family continues to collect - because people will be dependent on help for a long time to come.

Two weeks ago Hummel was in the disaster area. He drove three construction dryers, garden hoses, fans and six hot water boilers to Walporzheim in a caddy and another car. The latter were paid for with part of the donations. “Rivulets of inedible water are dripping from the pipe. People need these boilers particularly urgently, ”says Hummel. The conditions he saw during his aid visit shook the 43-year-old: “You cannot put people's suffering into words. The people have lost everything. "

With the donations from the Kolping Family campaign, the volunteers want to at least alleviate the suffering a little.

“Every cent arrives on site,” promises Hummel.

However, not in monetary form, but as donations in kind.

In Walporzheim, his cousins collect the most urgent wishes from neighbors and residents.

The Wolfratshausers get what they can get.

Then the next fully loaded caddies drive into the Ahr area.

The list of things needed is long because even the most obvious household appliances and everyday objects were destroyed by the floods.

"One of my cousins didn't even have clothes anymore - only what she was wearing when the flood came," says Hummel.

“There are unimaginable fates up there.” The family tragedy that one of the Wolfratshauser's cousins had to experience is even more serious.

The father of her ex-husband, the grandfather of her two sons, drifted away in the floods.

Hummel: "It hasn't been found until today."
