Obermaiselstein - This year alone, 25 accidents have been recorded.

Now several measures are to make the Riedberg Pass safer.

A no-overtaking ban and speed limits are under discussion.

The accident commission in the Oberallgäu district has examined the traffic situation on the Riedbergpass.

This year alone there have been 25 accidents, and motorcyclists are often involved.

Now the road administration in the district, together with the police and the district office, want to explore whether more can be done for safety in particularly accident-prone sections.

"Every accident, every accident fatality is one too many," says Felix Fleischhauer, head of the traffic authority at the Oberallgäu district office.

"We will try to get the situation under control bit by bit." The "great instrument" of the accident commissions could point to considerable successes.

Two accident commissions are in action in the district, one on the state and federal roads (around 260 kilometers), and a second on the district roads (275 kilometers).

Riedbergpass popular with motorcyclists

The district road OA 9 over the Riedbergpass is undoubtedly an attractive route for motorcycle fans: winding, steep, demanding and challenging.

The accident commission has identified three main accident areas on the 16-kilometer stretch of road between Obermaiselstein and Balderschwang, explains Martina Kisch, traffic safety officer at the Sonthofen police station.

The main causes of the accident were examined: Often it is an inappropriate speed on the winding route.

Risky overtaking maneuvers are also the order of the day, reports Martina Kirsch.

The task now is to develop measures that will further improve the traffic situation here.

Riedbergpass: The speed limit at the Scheuenalpe is coming

The first steps have already been taken. The directional signs on two sharp bends were supplemented by particularly eye-catching signs. This should also happen on other bends. A general speed limit to 60 km / h is not intended, emphasizes Felix Fleischhauer. Only in the area of the Wannenkopfhütte car park is there a permanent Tempo-60. This is also planned on the Balderschwanger side in the area of the Scheuenalpe / quarry, as well as a ban on overtaking.

Nevertheless, no measures are ruled out, but will wait for the development and effects of the "first package" and react if necessary.

Dynamic traffic-regulating facilities are also conceivable.

For example, based on the current information on the risk of accidents for motorcyclists, as it is at the top of the pass and at the beginning of the accident-prone route.

Riedbergpass: Underrun protection for crash barriers

"Conspicuous signals achieve the best warning effect," continues Fleischhauer.

"The motorcyclists are very busy with the special conditions of the pass road." A lonely hint at the roadside is out of my mind after a few moments.

Christoph Wipper, the head of the district civil engineering administration, also sees it that way.

“We are concerned with the accident.” The protective devices along the road were checked and brought up to date, and the underrun protection on crash barriers was added.

The district and its authority would continue to pursue the aspect of road safety intensively.

Suspicious truth clues

Wipper also relies on conspicuous warnings and selective "stimuli" to attract attention, such as bright yellow reflective directional arrows in the curves.

“That ensures better perceptibility and more attention,” he says.

"In the past 25 years, the district - supported by the Free State of Bavaria - has invested almost 80 million euros in this road," emphasizes Wipper. "I am convinced that we have built a safe road that is sensible to drive on - with brains and intellect."
