The California Parole Board last night (Saturday) recommended the early release of Sen. Robert Kennedy's killer, after 53 years in prison.
The killer's request, Sirhan Sirhan, will be examined in the coming months by the legal team of the parole board, after which the decision will be handed over to California Gov. Gwyn Newsam.
Only if all of these support the recommendation will Sirhan be released.
The recommendation came after Kennedy's two sons announced they supported his release.
Douglas Kennedy, who was a baby at the time of his father's murder, said Sirhan's remorse moved him to tears.
He added that "I am overwhelmed by the ability to see Mr. Sirhan face to face. I have lived my life when I am afraid of him, and even of his name. I am happy to see him today as a person worthy of compassion and love."
Sirhan, who is serving a prison sentence in a San Diego prison, has previously filed 15 requests for early release, but all have been denied.
Sirhan's lawyer, Angela Barry, said she was asking the commission to base its decisions on the person Sirhan is today, not on who he was in the past.

Sirhan, 77, a member of a Christian-Palestinian family from Jerusalem, assassinated Sen. Kennedy on June 5, 1968, the brother of US President John F. Kennedy, who was also assassinated.
During his interrogation, he admitted that he murdered the senator, who was a US presidential candidate at the time of the assassination, because he felt betrayed due to Kennedy's support for Israel during the Six Day War, although he later claimed he acted unconsciously, "perhaps as a result of hypnotic brainwashing."
