American actor Ed Asner passed away today (Sunday) at the age of 91, surrounded by his family.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

"We are sorry to announce that our patriarch passed away this morning," Asner said on his family's Twitter account.

"Words can not describe the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your forehead - good night Dad. We love you."

Asner was born in 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri, to an Orthodox Jewish family.

He starred in a number of theater and theater projects for several years, until he burst into consciousness in the legendary sitcom "Mary Tyler Moore's Show," where he played the character of Lou Grant.

The series aired from 1977-1970 and became one of the most successful in American history.

At the end of the series, Grant's iconic character got her own series ("Lou Grant"), which aired from 1982-1977.

Unlike the show that propelled him to fame, his solo series was a serious drama series.

For his role in both series, Asner won five Emmy Awards (three for the first and two for the second), making him the only actor in history to win Emmy Awards for playing the same character in a comedy series and a drama series.

Asner also starred in a number of roles in cinema, one of the most memorable of which is one in which his voice is not seen, but heard - "Upstairs", Pixar's 2009 Oscar-winning animated film, in which he voiced Karl Fredrickson, the tough old man who embarks on a surprising journey with a young Scout trainee .

This coming Wednesday, the "Dug Days" series that follows the character of Carl and the Dog Doug in the events after "Upstairs" is expected to air on "Disney +".

This is, in fact, Asner's last role.

Throughout his long career, he has won two more Emmy Awards - making him the most decorated actor in Emmy history.

He has won many other awards, including five Golden Globe Awards.

In 1992 he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
