Allgäu / Munich - beer and opera?

How does that fit together?

For the opera maker Andreas Baur, who grew up in Sulzschneid near Marktoberdorf, the “beer opera” is not a contradiction, but a unique, tangy and spicy crossover spectacle.

Now the musical Singspiel, which puts the Bavarian specialty in the spotlight, has received an award from the Bavarian Brewers' Association and the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association DEHOGA.

Simone Werner and Andreas Baur received the “Golden Beer Idea 2021” award during a ceremony at the GOP Varieté Theater in Munich for their opera about golden barley juice, which premiered in November 2019 in the Stadltheater in Blonhofen.

Adam and Eve

"The Beer Opera" is a musical singspiel, not only for traditional opera goers, but for a broad audience who drinks and appreciates beer and wants to be entertained in a stimulating and lively way.

At least that's what it says on the organizers' homepage.

However, due to the Corona regulations, no further performances are currently scheduled.

The Vice President of the Bavarian Brewers Association, Dr.

Michael Möller, praised the innovative crossover concept in his laudation.

Singing, acting and dancing tell the story of the traditional folk drink beer, starting with Adam and Eve in the Bier-Garten-Eden.

In terms of content, the “beer opera” cleverly combines fictional and real narrative elements and brings the viewer closer to the origins and cultural history of the golden elixir.

At the beginning of December 2019, the trained mezzo-soprano and dancer Simone Werner and composer Andreas Baur started with the premiere of the beer opera.

Two premier events in Blonhofen near Kaufbeuren, which were held in quick succession, were sold out.

The artists were celebrated for their successful work with standing ovations, calls for encores and overwhelming criticism in the media.

The foundation stone for a stage tour across the republic was laid and initial discussions with possible partner breweries and stages took place.

Corona, like many other plans, thwarted this one too.

"Let yourself be infected by our joie de vivre"

But now the ensemble is ready to go again and presented a thirty-minute excerpt from the beer opera on the Munich GOP stage at the award ceremony.

"We want our audience to be infected with this exuberant joie de vivre," explained Andreas Baur after the extremely successful tasting. Together with the entire team of eight orchestral musicians, the narrator and the four soloists, the opera makers conjured up a spectacle out of the beer mug. that could not even imagine the purity law.
