The car ferry of the German shipping company FRS made its way from Ibiza to Formentera, the smallest of the Balearic Islands, on Saturday evening.
But shortly after take-off, the ship ran aground on the small island of Es Malvins.
According to media reports, 25 people were injured, two of them seriously - including a ten-year-old boy.
He and eight other injured people were flown to a Mallorcan hospital by helicopter.
According to FRS, the ferry was only sparsely manned at the time of the accident: only 35 passengers and 12 crew members were on board.
The ship has space for 427 people.
