New work of art in front of the Tölzer Stadtwerke: So light and yet so heavy

In the Tölzer Kurier, art blacksmith Berndt Schweizer explains what the new work of art is all about in front of the entrance to the Tölzer Stadtwerke.

Bad Tölz

- Anyone who has recently passed the Stadtwerke building on Osterleite in Bad Tölz may have noticed that something has changed there.

A metal spiral supported by a yellow column has been decorating the green strip in front of the house since mid-August.

It is a work of art by the qualified designer and master blacksmith Berndt Schweizer from Peißenberg (Weilheim-Schongau district).

He created the work of art on behalf of the Stadtwerke.

The work of art in front of the Tölzer Stadtwerke was made from a weir chain from the Isar power station

The four-meter-long chain winds in a spiral from the high yellow base.

The special thing is that the sculpture consists of a 30-year-old weir chain from the Tölz Isar power station, says Berndt Schweizer.

This was previously used to open the weir when the water level was high.

Instead of disposing of the disused "employee", the municipal utilities decided to have her transformed into a work of art.

As a result, the Stadtwerke launched an appeal last year via the Kunstverein Tölzer Land.

As soon as the Swiss - who is himself a member of the association - found out about the advertisement, he went straight to work.

“I then built the first model from a motorcycle chain,” explains the blacksmith.

His design was ultimately preferred over another competitor.

However, Schweizer was only able to really get started in February of this year.

According to the blacksmith, the processing of the weir chain turned out to be "incredibly complex".

A crane had to be used to move the individual parts of the two-tonne chain.

But not only the unwieldiness of the metal parts to be processed made the work difficult.

Another great challenge was dismantling the chain links, reports the Peißenberger.

Because these first had to be freed from a thick layer of rust and cleaned.

Only then could the blacksmith weld the individual pieces together again.

It took Schweizer more than a month to design the chain.

With its curved shape, the work should "trace the path of the water" and convey a "lasting impression of the elemental force of water", explains the blacksmith.

When it came to the design, Schweizer was inspired by the water rollers at the Isar power station.

The sculpture is modeled on the spiral turning inwards.

The work of art is a memorial for the power of water, which should not be underestimated, says the designer.

At the same time, the defense chain is a symbol that it is possible to regulate this force of nature and make it usable for people.

According to Schweizer, this creates a “perfect symbiosis of artistic creativity and technical progress”.

Originally, the metal sculpture was to be placed on the roundabout on Lenggrieser Straße.

But that would have hindered the driver's view.

Now the old weir chain has found a new home in front of the municipal utilities.

The artist is happy with that too.

“This brings out the relationship between the municipal utilities and the weir even more,” says Schweizer.
