The Israeli delegation to the UN was shocked to discover in recent days that a UN Holocaust Remembrance Program is dedicating a conference on its behalf to the topic entitled: "The Bedouin in the Negev: Empty Lands and Displaced People - Israel's Treatment of the Bedouin as a Story of Displacement and Dispossession."
The conference is scheduled to take place in about two months on behalf of the United Nations Center for Holocaust Studies, Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity.
The invitation to the event states that "in a multi-participant panel, we will explore the unique nature of Bedouin resistance (to Israel, etc.), the history of forced urbanization (by Israel) and the situation in the unregulated Bedouin villages."
The invitation has been circulated in recent days by the UN Department of Communications and has sparked outrage.
Ambassador Arden, Mark Israel Salem
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Ardan, urgently addressed the organization's secretary general, Antonio Guterres, and protested the desecration of the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust.
"The UN is sponsoring a sickening event that desecrates the memory of the Holocaust and its victims," Arden stated, "and this is being done by the same organization at the UN that is supposed to preserve and commemorate the memory of those who perished. "An investigation that will prevent UN cooperation with such incidents in the future, and that harsh measures will be taken against those involved."
It should be noted that the Holocaust Awareness Program at the UN was established following the 2005 General Assembly resolution on Holocaust remembrance, initiated by Israel.
"Despicable and interesting event"
Against this background, the Ambassador added that "the use of the UN Holocaust Holocaust program, and in the context of genocide, to promote such attacks on the State of Israel - is cynical and outrageous.
"This despicable event serves only its anti-Israel organizers, including supporters of the boycott of Israel and activists in the de-legitimization campaign against Israel. They get backing from the UN for that, Arden believes.
