When the last American military plane has taken off from Kabul, Afghanistan will not once again become that distant and timeless country, "cemetery of empires" for which a handful of adventurous writers were passionate.
The attacks of September 11, 2001 placed it at the heart of the security and civilizational issues of the Western world.
It will remain there, concentrating the same dangers as twenty years ago.
The novelty is that it will be necessary to go through the Taliban to exert the slightest influence on events likely to affect us directly.
France and the United Kingdom are already experiencing this with their proposal to establish a "secure zone" to continue to exfiltrate the Afghans forgotten during the withdrawal.
Assuming that it gets a Russian and Chinese green light at the UN and ends up seeing the light of day, this passageway will remain at the mercy of the Taliban, who will not cede their sovereignty to it.
They will decide who to open it to, with reasons that we will need to clarify.
