Afghanistan: at least five rockets fired in Kabul, US evacuations continue

The United States has only two days to evacuate 300 Americans, hundreds of soldiers and as much material as possible.

The atmosphere is extremely tense in Kabul (Afghanistan).

Rockets flew over Kabul on Monday morning, the place where they landed is not identified, but Washington announced that they were targeting the airport, where US forces only have this Monday and tomorrow to evacuate everyone, including their own troops.

According to CNN, five rockets were fired at the international airport.

The C-RAM defense system - designed to protect ground forces against rockets, artillery and mortars - installed at the airport "came into contact" with the rockets, an American official said.

No casualties have been reported for the moment.

"The president was informed that operations continue without interruption" and "he reconfirmed the commanders to redouble their efforts in order to do as a priority all that is necessary to protect our forces on the ground", assured the White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

"Get them out of there"

There are still 300 Americans to be evacuated from the country, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday.

“We're working around the clock these hours and days to get them out of there,” he said on ABC.

The last phase of the evacuation operations was weighed down by the attack on Thursday near the Kabul airport, claimed by the Islamic State in Khorasan (IS-K), which left more than a hundred dead , including 13 American soldiers and two British.

The remains of American soldiers arrived Sunday at the military base in Dover (Delaware), received by President Joe Biden.

This Monday is also due to be held at the UN a meeting of the permanent members of the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan. France and the United Kingdom will advocate for the creation in Kabul of a "protected zone" to carry out humanitarian operations, Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday.
