The Directorate of Agriculture in As-Suwayda has warned of the spread of false tobacco in some areas of the governorate, calling when it is noticed to inform the nearest extension unit or contact the Plant Protection Department to take the necessary measures to remove it completely due to its health and agricultural dangers.
The head of the Prevention Department in the Directorate of Agriculture in Sweida, Engineer Hatem Al-Barbour, indicated in a statement to SANA reporter today that this plant is poisonous, colonizing the lands and replacing the original species and spreading rapidly, and one plant produces from 10 thousand to one million seeds and its parts do not contain nicotine as in real tobacco, but It contains a toxic compound called anabacin, and ingestion of any amount of it leads to fatal poisoning of humans and animals, including sheep and poultry.
Al-Barbour indicated that the symptoms of false tobacco poisoning are increased saliva secretion, a feeling of dizziness, dizziness, disturbance of movement, vision, hearing, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, followed by shortness of breath, convulsions, and nervous and muscle spasms that may reach death.
He stated that the methods of getting rid of the plant are by removing it completely from its roots, while the flower and fruit clusters are muzzled with tightly closed plastic bags and destroyed by burning to prevent the spread of its seeds.
He pointed out that the false tobacco plant or blue tobacco is an evergreen shrub that grows to a height of up to 6 meters, and its leaves are alternate, smooth, covered with a waxy layer of oval or spear shape, bluish green, and its flowers are yellow, arranged in the form of pink clusters, and the flower is cylindrical in shape, while its fruits are Its oval-shaped capsules contain large amounts of small-sized seeds.
