Before that, a photo of the young woman with an Afghan baby went viral.

Kabul / Kassel - An Afghan baby in the arms of a US soldier, subtitled "I love my job" - an Instagram post that went around the world in view of the current situation in Afghanistan.

The photo shows Nicole Gee, who was stationed in Kabul as a sergeant in the US Marines.

The 23-year-old died there on Thursday (August 26th, 2021).

The native Californian was on duty at Kabul Airport when a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the gate.

In addition to the young woman, more than 100 other people fell victim to the attack by the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), including several US soldiers.

Some media recently even assumed around 170 deaths.

Attack in Afghanistan: The woman's body arrived in the United States at the weekend

As the Pentagon announced, the coffins with the killed soldiers, including the young woman, arrived at an air force base in the state of Delaware last weekend.

The US government is expecting further attacks on the airport in Kabul, which the Americans want to keep open for further evacuation flights until their final withdrawal on Tuesday (August 31, 2021).

After IS admitted to the attack, the US responded promptly with a drone attack, in which, according to the Defense Department, two high-ranking members of the terrorist militia were killed.

This was "not the last" attack on those responsible who are behind the attack "on our troops and innocent civilians" in Afghanistan, said US President Joe Biden.

Nicole Gee dies: Young woman loved her job in Afghanistan

In the meantime, more than 150,000 people have given Nicole Gee's Instagram post a "Like" heart. While many people leave condolences below the picture, some are also wondering what happened to the baby. However, nothing is known about the fate of the child. It is unclear whether the parents were nearby at the time of the photo, or perhaps even among the desperate people who handed their children over the airport walls to the US armed forces to give the offspring a better life.

Nicole Gees sister spoke to the American news channel about the tragic death of the young woman.

She was "incredibly passionate and motivated" and loved her work in Afghanistan.

"She was my best friend, my first friend, my motivation and inspiration".

Nicole, like the rest of the family and friends, will "miss her terribly".
