Maluma is that 27-year-old Colombian boy behind the character, who one day visualized his face on the Time Square billboards and another day he sang for two million people in that mythical corner of New York.
Maluma, who recorded his first song thanks to a demo that his aunt gave him for his birthday, and the same one who said “no” to a childhood friend with whom he was going to form a duo to become famous, for the simple fact of being late for the first recording.

“Yo le dije ‘te quiero mucho, muchas gracias por motivarme a estar acá. Pero yo tengo códigos y uno de ellos es la disciplina, y me acabas de llegar tarde. Y eso muestra que no vamos a tener una muy buena vida o carrera de dúo. Entonces, muchas gracias, voy a seguir por mi camino’. Y ahí seguí yo”, recuerda el artista colombiano.

Maluma:
I think so, it was at that time. The truth is that when I walked into the recording studio, that was literally love at first sight. I remember when I heard my voice in the headphones, when I was recording and I said: 'I want to do this for the rest of my life'. My happiness, my serenity, my greatest peace I find in a recording studio. And I swear to you, it had been two minutes since we started recording. It was something very beautiful, an experience that I will never forget. And that's why I said: 'my thing in music'. Now the problem is how to tell my dad.
Marcelo Longobardi: Siento que vos tenés un carácter muy amigable y uno se siente cercano a vos inmediatamente. Pero leí una frase tuya compleja. Dijiste algo así como que ‘no tenías amigos en la industria porque, cuando te das vuelta, te apuñalan´. ¿Es así?
Maluma: Sí, pero no solamente en la industria de la música. Yo digo que en los negocios en general salen los carácteres más inesperados, ¿no? Y a mí me ha pasado así. He tratado de dar mi confianza a diferentes personas de la industria musical y me han pagado mal. Así que prefiero, como digo: ‘yo no soy rancho aparte’. Yo no tengo problemas con nadie en la industria. Y todo lo que me ha pasado me ha llevado a aprender mucho y yo no le llevo, como decimos en Colombia, la mala a nadie. Al revés. Soy una persona muy amigable. Y si me tiran con odio, yo respondo con amor. Siempre he dicho que eso es una ley de vida. Pero sí, yo prefiero ser rancho aparte, prefiero tener mis amigos del colegio. A mis amigos del colegio yo no los cambio por nada. Por qué me conocieron cuando estaba abajo, cuando no era absolutamente nadie. Y yo creo que eso es muy difícil de conseguir hoy en día. Personas reales, que te quieran de verdad y que quieran tu bien. No que te aplaudan. O sea, yo prefiero tener amigos y no porristas. Cuando llega el éxito, todo el mundo te aplaude, todo el mundo te dice que está bien. Inclusive cuando estás haciendo mal. Y si uno es inteligente, creo que te debes rodear de personas que sí te digan la verdad.

: You understand that many people have thought of it as a half-biographical thing ...
Maluma: Verdad, todo el mundo piensa que me pasó a mí, pero no. Yo creo que la gente se siente muy identificada con todo el tema de las redes sociales, todo lo que está pasando, como dice el coro ´muy lindo en Instagram lo que posteas, para que yo vea’. Pero todo el mundo sabe que no eres tan feliz. Y ahora está pasando eso, que realmente es otro mensaje que yo quiero mostrar y que quiero contar a la gente que uno es uno en la vida en Instagram, y es otra diferente en la realidad. Así que invito a que la gente que tiene redes sociales a que se quitó la máscara y sean reales y disfruten de sus redes sociales tal cual como son. Porque todos tenemos defectos, todos tenemos debilidades y es bonito también mostrarle eso a la gente.

Maluma: Siempre, todos los días. Me gusta ser una persona espiritual, me gusta leer, me gusta meditar, me gusta orar, me gusta creer que existe la reencarnación. Me lo disfruto, ¿sabes? Es un tema muy amplio y extenso, pero me lo disfruto mucho. Entonces, así me gusta ser espiritual, porque así soy yo y también por mi bienestar mental. Hago yoga cuando puedo, cuando estoy con mi tía, que es profesora de joya. Es muy bonito.
