Mexico will continue to "contain" immigration after dissolving caravan

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, affirmed this Sunday that his government will continue to "contain" immigration, after the National Guard dissolved a caravan of migrants in the south of the country.

"Yes, we will continue to contain it, but we have to look for fundamental and structural solutions, and the United States also has to give scholarships and has to allow temporary work visas for Central America," he said during an event in Metapa, Chiapas.

The president emphasized that the US needs immigrants to replace its workforce and that robotics cannot do that in the short term.

This Saturday a caravan left Tapachula, a city on the border with Guatemala.

Several local media and agencies reported that hundreds of migrants from Caribbean countries, as well as Central and South America, participated in it and whose final destination was the United States.

The caravan was disbanded that day by the National Guard.

Footage that CNN recorded on Saturday showed officers cut down and assaulted a man on the floor.

In a statement published this Sunday, the National Institute of Migration (INM) stated that it "condemns any action that harms the human rights of the population in the context of mobility" and reported that it notified the INM's Internal Control Body of what happened "to the legal effects that may arise ”.

The organism recognized that the federal agents of migration assumed a behavior "inappropriate and foreign to the protocols and policies of respect that the institute promotes".

They also indicated that they were carrying out an operation to control and verify immigration before the advance of a group of people towards Huixtla, at the point of the Tapachula-Arriaga highway, in Tuzantán, Chiapas.

"At that moment, a migrant person began to beat a federal immigration agent, for which two more elements came to his aid, assuming, however, inappropriate behavior," says the document without giving further details of the facts.

They added that attention to migrants "has always been" under the premises of adherence to the legal framework and with respect for human rights.

For his part, López Obrador said that they will continue to insist with the US government for the creation of a plan that promotes the development of southeastern Central America and "thus face the migratory phenomenon, because there is no other option that is the most humane. and the most effective is the return to the field ”.

He believed that this sector allows the generation of jobs and helps to face climate change.
