Slichot outside Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, where Barel Hadaria Shmueli (Yanir Yagana) is hospitalized

Shmueli enlisted in March 2019 after completing a pre-military preparatory course in the town of Ashalim, was assigned to the Border Police, and at the end of his training he took an undercover course and joined the southern unit, where he served as a sniper.

Shmueli was shot last Saturday, when clashes broke out between IDF soldiers and Palestinians who demonstrated near the fence at several points in the Gaza Strip. Palestinians threw stones at the fence and some of them even managed to climb it.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that 23 protesters were injured, including two in critical condition, including a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head.

In response to Shmueli's shooting and injury, IAF planes attacked four sites for the storage and production of Hamas weapons on Tuesday.

In addition, the navy opened fire on Palestinian boats that deviated from the area allowed for fishing off the coast of the Gaza Strip, following clashes between IDF soldiers and Palestinians who demonstrated near the fence at several points in the Gaza Strip. In the city.

Field commanders did not understand the potential risk of the slit through which it was fired.

Southern Command officers confirmed that the firing slit was an operational vulnerability that was not properly secured and that it would be plugged. "In the engineering design of the slit, all the commanders in the field did not understand its risk potential. Not only from zero-range fire, but also from explosive devices, sniping and throwing a spray grenade," the officers said, adding that the decision to block it was based on findings from the incident.

The officers also said that "the biggest mistake was relying on Hamas promising Egypt to curb the demonstrations through security forces deployed on the ground. Hamas deployed forces but allowed the incidents of violence and terrorism to develop. The IDF should have been more aggressive in the first place."

Closing the slit is not the only engineering action that the IDF intends to carry out following Shmueli's injury. Already last Sunday, it was decided to carry out extensive engineering activity near the border fence to prevent rapid access by protesters. Demonstrations do not help dispel a lot of violence.
