Moni Elias thought he could defeat the epidemic by maintaining hygiene and keeping his distance - without getting vaccinated • The decision almost cost him his life when he and his family were hospitalized at Rambam • Today he calls on all those who are hesitant: "Go get vaccinated, it's not an easy disease"

About a million Israelis, about half of them Israeli Arabs, have not yet been vaccinated against Corona in any dose.

Some corona patients in critical condition who have not been vaccinated, are beaten for sin after being in life-threatening condition.

In his testimony, Moni Elias, 57, a Christian Arab from Haifa, recounts how he and his family were not vaccinated and some found themselves in danger.

"Sometimes a person has to learn the hard way what is right and what is wrong. Sometimes there are things that are learned through the legs and after you are hit hard," he says.

He said that in the first year and a half of the corona plague the family members kept the rules of social distance, so he thought they could beat the disease without a vaccine.

"We are a family that does not travel much. We do not travel plowing the land or going to mass parties. We are a small family that pretty much takes care of itself and lives its life at home. I also kept masks and everything I needed. So there was no pressure to get vaccinated, and there were all kinds. "Rumors about the vaccine. People told me all sorts of things and I no longer knew what to believe. I preferred to avoid the vaccine," he says.

Regarding the question of why the Ministry of Health and the HMOs' information did not convince him, Elias replies that "it should be understood that the government's information did not seep into my sector. "She published and there were convincing statements against me in my environment. That's why we did not go to get vaccinated. Today I know it was a really serious mistake. I paid and we paid dearly for it."

Despite the mask and social distance, on August 5 a blue moon was discovered in Corona. After 12 days, he testifies that he could no longer breathe alone and he was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Rambam Hospital in Haifa. "Throughout the 12 days before hospitalization I took every drug I heard of. None of them helped and I could not defend against the corona. I suddenly realized that this disease is neither a game nor a flu, and I was sorry I was not vaccinated. I am also a person at risk. The fear caught me when I was "I was hospitalized and connected to devices. I asked my community to pray for me, and I prayed too."

Later, the rest of Elias' family members became infected.

His wife Samira, daughters Karin and Maria and son Paddy.

He said, "One of the girls needed help with oxygen. I, too, who had already been released, still needed oxygen, and only the son got the disease easily. We were misled and we did not get good information from the state. The HMO sent a message like everyone else, but we did not think it would "It's so hard. Now I call on everyone to get vaccinated. I saw how many doctors work hard to save people and how dangerous the situation was."

Mooney says that more information is needed in the Arab sector so that people like him will come more to get vaccinated.

Dr. Ami Neuberger, director of the Corona department at Rambam who treated the Elias family, told Israel Today yesterday that "they are very nice people who made a mistake. They were lucky because they were in a difficult situation, and now they are recovering. These are not big ideologues. "But in the people who made a mistake, and this mistake almost cost the life of the father and one of the daughters. I am glad that the father is calling for vaccination."
