The latest American plane took off from the international airport in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and with it the last soldiers who defended the airport and the evacuation of civilians from it, the country's media reported today (Monday).
New York Times reporter Matthew Aikins, who is in Kabul, told Taliban officials that the last plane carrying foreign forces took off from the airport.
"The sky above is calm and there is no aircraft traffic at the airport," the reporter reported on the social network Twitter, adding that he hears festive gunfire in the air by Taliban members.
The American news network CNN reported earlier that 1,200 people were evacuated from the airport in the last day of the evacuation, completing the largest air evacuation in history. Among the evacuees were aides from the country's foreign forces and civilians who feared retaliation from the Taliban.
Earlier, nine civilians, including a toddler less than two years old, were killed in a U.S. attack on Islamic State militant group Khursan province in Afghanistan yesterday. The Pentagon claimed that the matter was under investigation.
