Freising

- The weather didn’t necessarily play a role in exploring the temperature problem in the city of Freising.

Nevertheless, the interest in the climate walk last Saturday was relatively great.

Around 25 interested parties started looking for those neuralgic points that could become a problem in the extreme heat with the Bund Naturschutz and the Freising climate vigil.

The starting point of the climate walk: Marienplatz.

On midsummer days, staying in this place can quickly become uncomfortable due to the lack of shade - as actually in the Upper and Lower Main Street per se. Trees are simply missing, whereby "mobile" trees would hardly promise an improvement due to their small size.

For Manfred Drobny, managing director of the Bund Naturschutz Freising, these potted plants would only fulfill a cosmetic aspect.

Greening on the house is of little help

The research assistant at the Technical University of Munich, Sabrina Erlwein, could not give much hope in terms of greening facades either, because such greening would cool the house itself, but not the immediate surroundings.

But what do you do?

According to Erlwein, trees would of course be optimal, but such plantings in the middle of cities are often not that easy to implement, for example due to the growth of roots in the area of pipes.

Erlwein's suggestion: the use of pergolas or sun sails on Marienplatz.

A fountain, on the other hand, would hardly bring anything, unless you stood right next to it and got the evaporation.

The participants were hardly enthusiastic about the planned new granite pavement, which would heat up “like a tiled stove” in summer.

However, it was not possible to conclusively clarify whether the opening of the Moosach will provide cooling.

While Erlwein believes that the open Moosach will hardly cool down, Drobny is hoping for a noticeable effect.

Here, too, trees are urgently needed in order to be able to create oases of shade - but how many would ultimately be planted could not be clarified during the inspection.

Because, according to Erlwein, it is primarily the radiated heat that will bother people in these areas.

The Fürstendamm promises to cool down

What is just as fundamental: green, preferably coherent ribbons in the city like on Fürstendamm, which would also ensure a certain “passage” and thus a cooling off.

Because even if green spaces are only small, they would help people to cope better with heat and density, emphasized Sabrina Erlwein.

In conclusion, Manfred Drobny referred to a special natural history: The Mohrenbrunnen is overgrown with special spring mosses, which value the calcareous Freising water very much and which must be preserved from drying out.
