If you want fewer cars in the city, you need better local transport.

To this end, the SPD in Munich has developed a new 10-point plan.

Munich - The location for the press conference was probably chosen.

Less than 15 meters from the railway bridge over Lindwurmstraße, where the Poccistraße regional stop will be set up in the future, which is intended to make it easier for commuters to switch from the train to the subway.

And the SPD * would like more such opportunities for the S-Bahn.

To this end, the city council group and the Bavarian SPD have presented a ten-point catalog with demands.

The S-Bahn * is the backbone of public transport in the metropolitan region.

60 percent of regional traffic, says Bayern-SPD boss Florian von Brunn, would be handled with the S-Bahn.

That corresponds to around 840,000 passengers a day.

There is only a lack of reliability.

In addition, the S-Bahn network in Munich * is centrally located, transfers to the U-Bahn * are only possible at the intersections.

S-Bahn Munich: SPD calls for ring line and new stops - "Expansion takes too long"

As a solution, the SPD brings a circular track into play.

The ring closure is necessary in addition to the second trunk line in order to relieve pressure and create additional capacities.

To this end, the south and north rings are to be linked and expanded.

"Today's network is geared too much towards the city center," says SPD city councilor Nikolaus Gradl.

"If we want to have noticeably fewer cars in the city, we need an inner-city circular line in addition to the second main line *."

The comrades also want new stops on Berduxstrasse (Pasing *) and Großhesseloher Brücke.

There are already plans for Berduxstrasse.

The stop is to connect the new residential area on Paul-Gerhardt-Allee.

The SPD now wants an accelerated procedure.

“The scramble around the Berduxstrasse stop shows, on a small scale, the big problem we have with Deutsche Bahn and the Free State,” says Munich's SPD parliamentary group leader Christian Müller.

“The expansion of local public transport is simply taking too long.

If we have to negotiate for years at every new train station, nothing will go ahead. "

Munich: Accessibility and ten-minute intervals - what the SPD wants from the S-Bahn

In addition, existing stops are to be made barrier-free and safe. According to the SPD City Council Gradl, there are 14 stops in Munich alone that cannot be reached by wheelchair because there is no barrier-free access.

Or it is the difference in height between the platform edge and the train entrance for wheelchair users simply not to be bridged, so that they cannot get on.

Another requirement of the SPD is a continuous ten-minute cycle for the entire Munich S-Bahn on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Outside of this period, at least an area-wide 20-minute cycle should be aimed for.

Munich: 20 billion euros in 20 years - rapid expansion of the S-Bahn for climate protection

In addition, the Deutsche Bahn is to expand the infrastructure, consistently use long trains and expand the S4 route to the west to four lanes. Better connections between the S-Bahn line and the U5 in Neuperlach * -Süd are also desired. The Daglfing-Johanneskirchen route is to be expanded to four tracks in a tunnel. The SPD also demands the punctual completion of the second main line, modern bicycle parking facilities at all S-Bahn stops and the maintenance of the car train terminal at the Ostbahnhof.

How much all of this should cost is unclear. SPD leader Müller reckons that around 20 billion euros will be spent on local transport in Munich in 20 years. But the money is well invested. "The traffic causes the largest part of the greenhouse gas emissions in Bavaria," says Bayern-SPD boss von Brunn. “A much faster expansion of the S-Bahn is therefore necessary for climate protection.”

We have set up a Facebook group for every S-Bahn line, in which passengers can organize themselves: Form car pools if your S-Bahn fails. Organize a taxi and share the cost with others. Or simply ask other people affected for help - or offer them a place in your car. Together with other commuters, you are less alone in the chaos of the S-Bahn. You can also use the group on your S-Bahn line to inform yourself and others about the approximate time until train cancellations and delays can be expected. Here you can find a list of all S-Bahn groups on Facebook.
