Art connects - and it thrives on connections.

Corona stalled that for a long time, but now sculptors from all over the world are coming together again in Valley: The International Sculpture Symposium starts at Tobel on the weekend.

In 2020, Hohendilching

- Corona turned the international one into a very familiar sculptor symposium at Tobel in Hohendilching: His son Emil Ahlhelm and wood sculptor Teresa Glatt carried out a joint project (we reported), but renowned guests from all over the world had to stay away last year. This year the world is coming to Valley again: from September 5th to 18th the ninth symposium will take place in the sculpture clearing. This week, sculptor Tobel and his wife Christiane Ahlhelm, chairman of the Kunstdünger association, are expecting the arrival of artists from Japan, Colombia, Holland and Upper Bavaria, among others.

“Life goes on, and it has to go on in art too,” says Tobel. In contrast to many other cultural events, the sculpture symposium has at least one advantage in terms of pandemics: “We have to work outside anyway,” says Tobel, “everyone is at their work at a distance.” So for him there was actually no question of allowing the symposium to take place if the specifications do not conflict. Tobel knows from personal experience how important events and personal exchanges are for the artists. "Corona hits the art world particularly hard," says the Valleyer. As a result, he lost 80 percent of his income completely - because contract work abroad was canceled without replacement. So far, there have been no new orders. "I'm afraid that it won't recover so quickly."

Even his symposium has not quite returned to its old form; not all those invited can actually take part.

An artist from Australia canceled.

Tobel can understand this very well: "She can leave the country, but if she has to stay in quarantine for two weeks when she returns, that is disproportionate."

Artists work with stones, logs, tights

To this end, Tobel invited two stone sculptors who were not planned last year, Fernando Pinto from Bogotá in Colombia and Chris Peterson from Holland, who was a guest in Valley before. They complement the group with stone sculptor Takeshi Kubo from Hyogo, Japan, Teresa Glatt, who lives in Munich and now wants to work on the oak trunk that has been available since last year, as well as the artist duo Stefanie and Emmanuel Heringer from Schechen, who created a steel-willow network manufacture. The Munich artist Sibylle Kobus, who is active in the Kunstdünger association, wants to artistically research her pantyhose structures that were stretched out in the sculpture clearing years ago in the new project "Secondary Biotope, Autopoetic".

This year, red sandstone from the Schweinstal near Kaiserslautern will be used by the stone sculptors, reports Tobel. “The 20 tons of material have already been delivered and driven down to Mangfall in individual blocks up from the village of Hohendilching. Now the workplaces will be equipped with electricity, water and - hopefully for free - rain roofs. "

The symposium will open on Tobel's sculpture clearing on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at 2 p.m. with a round of introductions, during which the artists will present their plans.

In the following two weeks, visitors are welcome to look over the artists' shoulders on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at work - with the necessary distance, of course, not only because of Corona, but also because of the heavy machinery such as chainsaws, angle grinders, welding machines and pneumatic hammers that are used, as well as - for the first time - a research microscope.

The finished works of art will be presented at the finissage on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 5 p.m.
