Cigarettes: why the price of some packs is falling

2021-09-01T17:42:40.477Z

From this Wednesday, September 1, the price of certain packs of cigarettes drops below the symbolic bar of ten euros.

This decrease does not go unnoticed, in a context of steady increase in recent years.

Indeed, certain packs of cigarettes see their price drop, on this Wednesday, September 1st.

Minus twenty euro cents for the Camel Black or Blue, as well as for the Winston Xsphere.

Minus ten cents for the Lucky Strike Bleu or the Vogue L'Originale Verte Claire.

Some cigarettes thus fall below the symbolic bar of ten euros, the objective initially set by the government of Emmanuel Macron in its desire to fight against smoking.

To do this, tobacco taxes - which represent more than 80% of the price of the pack - have gradually increased since 2017. Last year, the State achieved its goals, since many packets, among the most sold, have reached ten euros.

For comparison, in March 2018 the average price was around eight euros.

Tax freeze in 2021 and 2022

Since the executive's decision to freeze tobacco taxes in 2021 and 2022, price cuts are not that unusual.

"

There are often small decreases

", explains the side of the National Committee against smoking (CNCT).

Manufacturers are cutting back on their margins on the cheapest ranges, which they compensate by a reverse trend on their premium ranges.

"A commercial strategy confirmed by one of the biggest players in the sector, British American Tobacco France (BAT), owner of Lucky Strike, Vogue or Dunhill, who speaks of"

price war between tobacco companies

".

But for the CNCT, this downward movement in the price of certain packets shows only one thing: that the tobacco industry "

is absolutely not engaged in a strategy to reduce cigarette consumption, contrary to what it regularly displays.

". This refers in particular to the statements of the leaders of Philip Morris International (Marlboro, Philip Morris, Chesterfield ...), who recently pleaded for "a world without cigarettes".
