Ramadama in spring has now become a tradition.

But this year, for the first time, there is a second cleanup day: World Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 18.

Fürstenfeldbruck - The waste management company (AWB) is also there.

Kristina Huber explains what's behind the campaign.

Ms. Huber, what is World Cleanup Day about?

World Cleanup Day has its origins in Estonia.

In 2008 there was a call for global garbage collection for the first time.

Since then, garbage has been collected at the same time every year in all possible parts of the world, a global Ramadama, so to speak.

The aim is of course to collect as much rubbish as possible.

However, it is a much bigger goal to make the population aware of the waste problem and to make them more aware of them.

How does Fürstenfeldbruck participate?

Since 2018 there has been a sponsoring association for Germany that has set up its own website for this event.

Every person, municipality and association can enter an action on this.

At the end, the amount collected and any special finds are reported to the organizers.

The waste management company has also registered and will report the amount of waste and findings at the end.

What can the citizens expect on September 18th?

On the day of the action we will meet at 9.45 a.m. on the grounds of the large recycling center, Am Kugelfang 5, in Fürstenfeldbruck.

First of all there will be a greeting and handing out of material as well as a division into groups.

The waste is collected in these groups in the Hasenheide area.

At the end, everyone meets again at the large recycling center at 12 noon.

The rubbish bags are counted, special finds are photographed and a final group photo is taken.

A small snack is also provided.

We will announce more detailed information in the week before the event.

Which goal should be achieved that day?

Since this is the first time we are doing this, we have no specific goal.

We want to reach as many people as possible with the appeal.

Be it that you take part yourself, or that you just became aware of this action.

Otherwise we are curious to see how much we can collect in this time and what special finds await us.

What role does the waste management company play on World Cleanup Day?

Since the AWB has already supported many Ramadama campaigns, be it by schools or communities, we wanted to become active as a participant in such an event ourselves.

And at the same time use our role as a waste management company to make people aware of the issue of the environment and waste again, especially during this time.

What advice can the AWB give the citizens apart from the World Cleanup Day with regard to waste avoidance?

The top priority is of course avoiding waste.

The key here is to start small.

With small steps in everyday life it is very easy to avoid waste and at some point it becomes a habit.

Be it taking your own cup or returnable cup for coffee-to-go, buying unpackaged vegetables and fruit and gradually switching to reusable products in the household.

Nevertheless, of course, there is still waste.

If you want to do something for the environment, you should really separate rubbish.

This ensures that all recyclable materials are actually recycled and that primary resources can be saved and greenhouse gas emissions reduced.
