Statutory health insurance doctors are calling for a Stiko recommendation for a third corona vaccination

Health Minister Spahn had already suggested so-called booster vaccinations weeks ago. Doctors are now demanding "fact-based decisions" from Stiko.

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) had already spoken out in favor of Corona booster vaccinations in the past, but so far there is no uniform course for this in Germany. Now the statutory health insurance physicians are demanding a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) for the so-called booster vaccinations against the coronavirus. "The Stiko has the data to issue a recommendation for a third vaccination for certain groups," said the chairman of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), Andreas Gassen, to the newspapers of the Funke media group. »The Stiko would be the right institution for such requirements. That's where the experts sit who actually have a clue about vaccination. "

It is a matter of first protecting those who have an increased risk of the disease with a third dose.

"Stiko makes rational, fact-based decisions - unlike politics," said Gassen.

Spahn had already considered refreshments in mid-August.

"A booster vaccination is covered by the approvals, it strengthens and extends the vaccination protection," said Spahn.

The federal states would already gradually begin with the so-called booster vaccinations in the care facilities and for particularly vulnerable people.

In addition, those who had previously only received vector vaccines could be vaccinated again.

"In a second step, we can then think about offering everyone else a booster," Spahn continued.

Lauterbach calls for a clear announcement

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach demanded that this step should now be taken.

Politicians must now make a clear announcement which groups should be given the booster vaccinations first.

"It must be clear which age groups are involved and for which risk factors a third vaccination is indicated."

Refreshments are common and necessary with many vaccines: the vaccine against tetanus has to be refreshed every ten years, and there is a modified vaccine against influenza every year.

The corona vaccination creates neutralizing antibodies in the blood that can fight Sars-CoV-2.

It also activates specific T cells that can recognize and kill intruders.

The Stiko at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has not yet given a recommendation for the refresher.

The UK is already planning a refresher campaign this year after vaccine advisors recommended a third vaccination from September, especially for the elderly and particularly at risk.

According to a newspaper report, the US authorities are also considering recommending a booster vaccination after six months instead of the previous eight.
