The island of slaves: Marivaux drops the masks

2021-09-01T14:06:22.499Z

CRITICAL - Didier Long stages this short but disturbing comedy by the author who plays on the role reversal.

The island of slaves

(1725) would be a small masterpiece as we like to repeat.

A small masterpiece perhaps but signed Sieur Marivaux, which puts the judgment into perspective.

It is true that this play is much less well known than the great classic comedies of the guy such as

The Game of Love and Chance

and

The False Confidences.

which in their genre touch cheerful perfection.

Our joy to see this philosophical comedy staged by Didier Long this fall is even greater.

The plot takes us to an ancient island where the social order is overthrown: the masters become slaves and vice versa.

The island becomes a paradise for the servants, a hell for the masters.

Here is a reversal which amuses and which asks questions.

So do masters deserve to be?

Is the valet condemned to his condition of slave?

Etc.

The decor is a bit sketchy - we have a little trouble projecting ourselves onto this island that looks like a blackish cage - but hey, we'll get used to it.
