Dachau - cramming during the holidays?

Most students cannot quite imagine that.

But the so-called summer school has been running at some schools in the Dachau district since Monday.

This is also the case at the Dachau secondary school.

The Ministry of Culture funded project has been very well received there.

Eleven-year-old Filip and his classmate Andreas of the same age practice the local adverbs with their teacher Heike Hünemann-Rottstegge. They are two of a total of seven students who enjoy the “luxury version” of the summer school for two weeks, as mathematics teacher Jadwiga Zychon describes it. Zychon actually works in the midday care of the all-day branch. So now summer school. Zychon quickly got her protégés out of vacation "sleep mode", and now everyone is highly motivated. The teacher is of course happy about that.

The children also know Hünemann-Rottstegge from lunchtime care. Julia Sikora, on the other hand, is new to the Realschule Dachau, who is studying to be a Realschule teacher in the subjects of sport and English in her third semester. English, math and German, these are the subjects in which the boys and girls can catch up on the material they missed due to the lockdown in the two weeks until the new school year.

A teacher for two or three students is of course ideal.

In this way, the educators can respond individually to each student, which is often not possible in regular school operations.

“The students are very focused.

The special attention helps many to learn and understand better.

This is a great opportunity for the children, ”says the headmistress Tanja Huber, who emphasizes that after the long distance lessons, the pupils now benefit greatly from being close to the teachers.

The headmistress would have wanted around 30 students for the summer school.

The respective teachers had suggested students in whom they had found knowledge gaps.

Seven students were finally enrolled by their parents.

“But these are exactly those for whom it is absolutely important that they are here,” says Huber happily.

With the help of feedback sheets that the teachers created for each child, the summer school teachers can now see how they need to support the children.

After the two weeks, the summer school teachers then give feedback to the future teachers of their current protégés, who come from grades 5 to 7.

In the summer school, however, there is no stubborn cramming.

Julia Sikora offers her protégés daily sports units in which they can juggle or do yoga.

Starting next week, the offer will be expanded to include a creative element.

Then art teacher Jonas Deimel will complete the summer college.

The offer is rounded off by the “Learn to learn” course.

Two weeks less lazing around, going for a swim or meeting up with friends, talking to the summer students is anything but bad.

Even if he didn't feel like it at the beginning and he wanted to “rather stay at home”, the eleven-year-old Filip is happy that he can practice the local adverbs and finally understands exactly what is meant by it.

He reports diligently, is doing well and is happy to catch up on the material and then be optimally prepared to start the 6th grade.

“I think that's really cool,” says Filip.

His classmate Andreas also raises his hand again and completes the sentences as Heike Hünemann-Rottstegge has just shown.
