European Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell today renewed European demands for an independent military force.
AFP quoted Borrell as saying at the beginning of the European Union defense ministers meeting in Slovenia today: "The need for a greater European defense has never been more clear than it is today after the events in Afghanistan" and the Taliban's control of it after the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from it.
It is noteworthy that the European Union has been divided for years over the role it should play in the field of defense, especially because of the great reluctance on the part of the Eastern European countries that are very attached to the umbrella of NATO and the Americans.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced yesterday that the European Union should take the necessary measures to make it militarily independent, considering that what happened in Afghanistan recently revealed the necessity of this step.
