China has started practical trials of using a local robotic laparoscopic surgery in gynecology in hospitals.
The robot-assisted operation is a major advance in medical technology and a breakthrough in the domestic surgical robot industry, said Wang Jianchen, CEO of the Chinese Medical Robotics Company EDGE. "Surgical robots have only been used in gynecology and obstetric departments in a few hospitals.
He considered that the unaffordable high cost for most patients hindered the development of robotic surgery in China.
Developed by Shenzhen-based Edge Medical Robotics Co., Ltd., the robot allows specially trained doctors to perform surgeries with greater precision and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery can also reduce surgical trauma and speed up patients' recovery.
"Surgical robots can play a vital role in enhancing the capacity of hospitals at the grassroots level, allowing doctors to provide better medical services to more patients," said Meng Yuanguang, director of the Department of Gynecology at the People's Liberation Army General Hospital.
"Surgical robots will be widely used in other fields including general surgery and thoracic surgery in the future," Guang added.
