Christian Drosten is certain that contact restrictions will again threaten in autumn.

The virologist strongly recommends vaccination.

Berlin - The Berlin virologist Christian Drosten does not believe that the corona rules will remain so loose in autumn. Drosten assumes that there will be contact restrictions again in October and November. He did not want to say whether this should also be the case for those who had been vaccinated. "We will have to limit the number of contacts again for society as a whole," said the virologist, however. Drosten is "firmly" counting on the fact that stricter measures will be introduced again in autumn.

Drosten's assessment is based on modeling by the Robert Koch Institute at the end of July.

However, some of the assumptions made at the time are no longer relevant.

Among other things, the transmission rate of the delta variant was underestimated.

Scientific studies from the UK also showed that people infected with Delta were more likely to have severe illnesses and need hospital treatment.

Christian Drosten: Corona vaccination quickly loses its transmission protection

At the same time, it was recently proven that vaccinated people lose “significantly their transmission protection” after four to six months. You can then pass on the Corona * virus again. "The infectiousness in the throat is no longer prevented, but only shortened," said Drosten. For the virologist, the main problem is that the RKI is too optimistic about the development of the vaccination rate in Germany.

At the same time, Drosten promoted the corona vaccination * and emphasized the enormous importance of this.

He emphasized that with a vaccination rate of around 61 percent of those who were fully vaccinated, it would not be possible to go into the autumn.

Only with a significantly higher rate of 90 percent could the pandemic reach a satisfactory state for society.

It is necessary that at least 85 percent of those under 60 and over 90 percent of those over 60 are fully vaccinated.

You can get out of there, the only question is: Can you increase the rate that much? "

"In the fall, the probability of getting infected will be higher than ever before in this pandemic. That is exactly why you should try to get a vaccination appointment quickly. The emphasis is on now."

Virologist Drosten: Children at risk should get vaccinated

Of course, there are other ways to keep the pandemic in check, but these are more secondary measures and more supportive means.

Drosten recommended that children under 12 should continue to have regular tests in schools.

“You have to manage a school in some way that doesn't lead to an exponential increase in infection activity in this unprotected age group.

For children who are considered to be at risk, the virologist recommends getting vaccinated with the approved vaccines.

There is enough experience that off-use label applications are possible.
