Tegernsee - The members of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen appeal for more climate protection in the Tegernsee valley.

The time to act is now.

The Tegernsee Valley Green Local Association has responded to the analyzes and discussions on the problems of the Tegernsee Valley that have taken place frequently in recent times.

"We don't have a problem of knowledge, but an implementation problem," explains Thomas Tomaschek, chairman of the local association.

"Instead of just talking, those responsible should finally act."

The valley reaches its limits in almost all areas. The traffic is unbearable, the landscape is being built up, living space is scarce and extremely expensive, investors are getting rich and young families are being displaced. All of this is known and undesirable. Nonetheless, decisions that seem to have no alternative are constantly being made, which intensify these developments. "But we could decide differently if we only wanted to," Thomas Tomaschek is certain and gives a few examples:

  • Investors are planning new hotels and apartment blocks and are enriching themselves, although there is virtually no unemployment in the valley and staff and staff living space are in short supply. Several hundred new hotel beds would be created in the next few years. The costs of these projects would be socialized by increasing traffic and leisure pressures and living space becoming more expensive and even more competitive. The profit will be privatized and will benefit a handful of investors who are driving steady growth in a limited valley. Tensions between valley residents and excursion guests would also continue to increase.

  • Removals from the landscape protection area would be made in order to create building rights and make the valley more attractive for tourism. But the opposite is the case: "We are destroying our most important capital by building up our landscape and making it so unattractive that the guests won't come," explains the chairman of the local Green Association.

  • The municipalities' energy use plans are in the drawer and are hardly being implemented. These plans would contain concrete proposals to counter climate change and implement the energy transition. The impression arises that the energy use plans only serve as an alibi to simulate a willingness to act. Local statutes would limit photovoltaic systems and slow down the energy transition. Energy efficiency networks are sometimes not joined and street lighting in some valley communities has still not been converted to energy-saving LED technology. You drive on sight and not with foresight.

  • Underground car parks would be created with every second new building and would exacerbate the flood problem. The maximum sealing of large plots of land causes long-term damage through the laying of groundwater streams. "In the Tegernsee spa garden, old trees also have to give way to create space for a large, two-story underground car park," says the Green Council from Rottach-Egern. “Parked cars may disappear underground, but the traffic jams on the road remain. Basically nobody wants these cars in the valley, but we are still creating new parking spaces. "

  • The forest has an important protective effect for the climate.

It prevents soil erosion and is a habitat for wild animals.

You have to handle it carefully and convert it to a climate-stable forest in order to maintain the ecological balance.

Clear cuts like the Kirchenwald on the Tegernseer Höhenweg would not be compatible with sustainable forestry.

The global problem of species extinction is also taking place locally.

Grouse, butterflies and insects are threatened with extinction.

"Up until now we felt like we were on an island of bliss, but the recent catastrophic events with floods, storms, hail and heavy rain clearly show us that the climate is changing and we are also affected," says Thomas Tomaschek.

Everyone agrees on the goals that have been set.

Everyone is for sustainability, environmental protection and a liveable and lovable Tegernsee valley.

"In implementing these goals, however, we need a policy change with more assertiveness, the will to act and the courage to change," explains the chairman of the local association and points out solutions that are known:

  • All decisions should be consistently geared towards environmental protection, and outdoor areas and protected landscape areas should be respected.

  • Visitors should be directed efficiently with more quality than quantity in tourism.

  • Restrictive building and a targeted selection of investors who plan in an agreeable manner.

  • Mobility turnaround with massive expansion of local public transport and a focus on bikes, buses and trains, among other things through a sharp reduction in parking options in order to reduce individual motorized traffic.

  • Consistent energy saving and determined use of renewable energies.

  • Conversion to ecological agriculture with small-scale family businesses, which, in contrast to industrial agricultural factories, can do a lot for the landscape and biodiversity.

"The longer we wait with these measures, the more expensive climate change will be for us," Thomas Tomaschek sums up.

“We cause permanent environmental damage and impair the health and quality of life of all people in the valley.” As long as the economy with the quick money is the focus, ecology and sustainability have no chance.

"We call on all mandate and decision-makers to be courageous, to make uncomfortable decisions and finally to act in the interests of sustainability and environmental protection," the Green municipal council appealed in conclusion. “The problems have long been recognized and there are solutions. The time to act is now. ”
