Mercedes AMG-GT 63 SE Performance, the hybrid in sportswear

2021-09-02T16:04:02.650Z

NEW - A power of 843 hp, an electric range of 12 km and CO2 emissions of 196 g: the technical sheet of the first AMG with rechargeable battery.

Even Mercedes' AMG sports division is no exception. Its range will gradually become electrified to help reduce the carbon footprint of the star firm. This program begins with the introduction of an AMG-GT 63 SE Performance. Presented as a world premiere at the Munich Motor Show in September 2021, this sporty sedan joins the category of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Its 639 horsepower 4-liter twin-turbo V8 is combined with a 150 kW (204 hp) electric machine placed on the rear axle, for the benefit of weight distribution. It is integrated into an electric drive unit comprising an electronically controlled locking differential and a two-speed gearbox. The second speed can change to 140 km / h at the latest, which corresponds to the maximum speed of the electric motor. For his part, the V8 remains mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Engineers have defined several operating strategies.

When the vehicle is driven by the power of the electric motor, it drives the rear wheels but the electric motor can also drive the front wheels to strengthen traction when needed. The AMG-GT then becomes a four-wheel drive sedan. This is not luxury since the manufacturer announces a gargantuan torque of 1,400 Nm under certain conditions. The performance is also that of a real sports car: 100 km / h is reached in 2.9 seconds. The electric machine is powered by a 6.1 kWh battery ensuring a range of 12 km. This may seem insufficient, but the engineers were especially keen to preserve the sporting performance of the vehicle. The battery thus does not exceed 89 kilos. Thanks to very efficient energy recovery strategies,Mercedes ensures that the driver almost always has a reserve of electricity. Engineers have defined three recovery modes. Level 3 triggers “one-pedal” driving, eliminating the need for the driver to apply the brakes in most situations.

The AMG GT 63 SE Performance is fully equipped, including the AMG RIDE CONTROL + air suspension and large-diameter ceramic carbon disc brakes.
