The estimates of the Directorate of Agriculture in Tartous Governorate for the current season of olive fruits amounted to 50,458 tons.
In a statement to SANA reporter, Eng. Muhammad Abdul Latif, head of the Department of Fruitful Trees in the Governorate’s Agriculture Directorate, pointed out the stability of the planted area and the number of trees with a decrease in production compared to previous years, where it reached about 91 thousand tons in 2019, saying: The reason for this is due to the lack of labor and the high cost of supplies. The production of fertilizers and pesticides, and the concentration of agriculture in the rugged mountainous areas that lack agricultural roads, which hinders easy access and proper servicing, in addition to the climatic conditions of high heat, humidity and warmth of winter, which led to the spread of insect pests such as olive moth, olive tuberculosis, peacock spotting and others.
And Abdul Latif indicated that the directorate is activating olive cultivation by providing healthy plants and the required varieties through nurseries at nominal prices, in addition to publishing instructions for implementing integrated management programs for the most important pests affecting the olive tree and controlling them using pheromone traps attracting to control and controlling olive insects and providing these materials free of charge to farmers. .
It is noteworthy that the total number of olive trees amounted to 11.140 million fruit trees, including about 10 million trees planted on an area of 75,334 hectares, while the number of trees in 2019 was about 11.5 million fruit trees, of which about 10 million trees were planted on an area of 75421.1 hectares.
