Gur Steinberg, the coach of the men's surfing team, met today (Thursday) at noon with the chairman of the Israel Sailing Association, Shai Buber, and with the association's CEO, Smadar Pintov, and reached a joint agreement on ending his career at the association, after the Tokyo 2021 campaign.
Steinberg, 52, is one of the most decorated coaches in Israeli sports and the only one to lead an athlete to two Olympic medals (with Gal Friedman in Atlanta and Athens).
He has also signed 16 medals at world and European championships.
During the Tokyo campaign, Steinberg led the men's team, recommended the selection of Yoav Cohen to represent Israel at the Olympics and led him to fourth place, as a step away from another Olympic medal.
Shai Buber, Chairman of the Sailing Association: "Gur Steinberg is a coach and professional from his youth onwards.
His fingerprints are on many pages in the history of Israeli sailing.
Five years ago, Gur returned to active training in the union and led the men's team to Tokyo with great success, and we hoped to continue together to Paris as well.
"I am sad to see him finish his way today, even if it is done in a good spirit and with the consent of both parties. I wish him much success in the future and hope that our paths will cross in the future."
