Nuremberg / Fürth - While some go to the cemetery to commemorate their deceased relatives, two men from Fürth * looked around for booty.

Over the course of two months, the two tore everything under the nail that could be turned into money.

In doing so, they did not hesitate to damage the graves.

Grave robbers in Fürth captured grave jewelry in the high five-digit range

According to police investigations, a 58-year-old and a 31-year-old man stole a lot in a cemetery in Fürth between September and October 2020. They stole grave bowls, grave lamps and flower vases. Presumably in daylight, they marked suitable objects with wet wipes. They probably came back the following night, kicked the non-ferrous metal objects out of their anchoring and covered the breakpoints as best they could. According to the prosecution, they deposited the stolen property at a location on the edge of the cemetery that was accessible from outside by vehicle. The men are said to have sold some of the non-ferrous metal to unsuspecting recycling companies. They achieved proceeds of around 3500 euros.

The stolen metal was only a small part of their loot.

In total, they are said to have stolen goods worth around 66,700 euros.

The men were found guilty of theft in 159 cases.

The older of the two grave robbers is now facing a long prison term.

He was sentenced to four years and three months in prison by the Nuremberg-Fürth regional court.

His accomplice was given two years probation, a justice spokesman said on Friday.

The reason the 58-year-old was punished so harshly was because of his long criminal record, the spokesman said.

The judgment is based on the requirements of the public prosecutor's office

The prosecutor had demanded four and a half years in prison for the 58-year-old and a two-year suspended sentence for the accomplice. The 58-year-old's defense lawyer pleaded for four years in prison, the 31-year-old's lawyer for one and a half years' probation. In the end, in the case of the elder grave robber, the court decided in favor of the middle. The younger one received the punishment demanded by the public prosecutor's office.
