Moscow - Russia's state censorship has threatened Apple and Google with a fine. The government of Vladimir Putin in Moscow accuses the providers of wanting to intervene in the upcoming elections by supporting the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Critics say this is an attempt to stifle criticism just before next month's general election. Last Thursday (September 2nd, 2021) “Roskomnadzor”, the federal service for supervision in the field of communication, information technology and mass communication, put pressure on the tech giants. You will be liable to prosecution if you fail to comply with the Russian legal system.

The parliamentary elections were postponed until the end of the month.

The Kremlin critics, including Navalny allies, were excluded from the elections.

Last month, Roskomnadzor demanded that Google and Apple ban Nawalny's apps from their app stores.

"Criminal liability is intended for those who organize and work on extreme organizations that are banned in Russia," said the Federal Service for Supervision.

Russia: Google and Apple face heavy fines

A statement said that the unwillingness to remove the app could be interpreted as interference in the Russian elections. Furthermore, it is said that the lack of willingness to cooperate leads to "heavy" fines. "Roskomnadzor" said that Google and Apple face fines of four million rubles ($ 55,000) for not restricting access to the app, Russian news agency Interfax said. State Department spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the US tech giants had ignored requests from Russian authorities to delete “illegal content”.

"Such arrogant, purposeful behavior and demonstrative disregard for several requests from Russian authorities regarding extremist content is truly unacceptable," she told reporters.

Navalny's organizations were classified as "extremist".

His supporters were banned from the elections while all of his aides fled the country.

Russian media regulation banned dozens of websites associated with the opposition leader, including his own website, "navalny.com".

Moscow: Navalny spokeswoman describes the ban as interference in the elections

In a message from prison, Navalny asked his followers to download an app designed to help Russians vote out candidates from the leading Russian party in the upcoming elections.

These tactics resulted in the increasingly unpopular Russian party losing several seats in local elections.

"If anything should be called 'interference in the Russian elections', it would be Roskomnadzor's attempt to ban the app," wrote Nawalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh on Twitter.
