The passenger accused of beating a Southwest Airlines flight attendant and breaking three of her teeth on a May flight is now facing federal felony charges.

Vyvianna Quinonez is charged with assault that resulted in serious physical injury and interference with flight crew members and aides, according to court documents.

  • Rebellious passengers put flight safety at risk, FAA warns

This incident is one of more than 4,000 reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this year committed by unruly and sometimes violent passengers aboard airplanes.

Nearly 3,000 of those incidents involved passengers accused of violating the federal requirement to wear a face mask on airplanes, according to the FAA.

In the Quinonez case, court records say that a flight attendant, identified by the initials SL, asked Quinonez to put away her tray, fasten her seatbelt, and wear her mask before landing at San Francisco International Airport. Diego on May 23.

It is not clear from the documents if Quinonez complied, but the documents indicate that the flight attendant approached her again.

Quinonez then pushed the flight attendant, "got up and knowingly assaulted SL by intentionally hitting SL in the face and head with a closed fist and grabbing SL by the hair," according to the documents.

"SL's left eye was bruised and swollen; he had a cut under his left eye, which required four stitches; he had a finger-shaped bruise on his right forearm, and three of his teeth were chipped, two of his teeth were so badly damaged that they were replaced with crowns, "according to court records.

An attorney for Quinonez did not respond to a request for comment from CNN.

Why is the number of unruly passengers on airplanes increasing?

Quinonez claimed after the incident that he "acted in self-defense," according to court documents.

He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on September 17.

The day after the incident, the union representing Southwest flight attendants said that passenger misconduct had reached an "intolerable level."

In recent weeks, the union said in-flight incidents and other working conditions have left its ranks "tired, exhausted, frustrated and forgotten."

Southwest did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the charges.

He said in response to the August letter from the flight attendants union that he is "aware of the concerns" and that "there is already a lot of work underway to address many of the problems."
