The Spanish authorities announced the rescue of 208 illegal immigrants from small boats heading to the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula or the Spanish Canary Islands.
Russia Today quoted the Spanish rescue service as saying that "a total of 106 migrants, including 44 women and 20 minors, were found in boats bound for Gran Canaria and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands," noting that ships operated by the Spanish Maritime Rescue Service intercepted the boats in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. .
Four other boats carried 102 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean to mainland Spain.
Spain witnessed a 49 percent increase in unauthorized immigration this year compared to January and August of 2020, according to the Ministry of the Interior, and 20,491 people arrived on Spanish soil, most of them by sea.
