The Foreign Ministry announced tonight (Saturday) that the state will ask the High Court for a six-month postponement of the evacuation of the Palestinian village of Khan al-Ahmar.

The move was drafted by the High Court about three years ago and provoked widespread public criticism from the left, as well as demands to advance it from the right. Since then, the decision has been rejected many times, mainly in light of the Corona crisis and "security timing."

The communities of the Jahalin tribe lived in the Negev area until the early 1950s, when they were deported and moved to the Mishor Adumim area. Today, about 200 of them live in the village of Khan al-Ahmar. The residents live in tents and huts set up without permits and for years there have been hearings in the High Court regarding evictions

. In a rejected petition, the villagers claimed that they were willing to submit the detailed plan for its settlement, but the Civil Administration refused to accept it on the grounds that the documents proving their ownership of the village were missing.

Following the rejection of the petition, the state informed the local residents that they must vacate by October 1, 2018 on their own, otherwise there will be a forced eviction. So far, however, this has not happened.

Residents claim that the compound offered to them is not suitable for their needs as the size of the plots is too small for raising sheep and grazing, and also say that its new location is problematic because it is close to other tribes.

The residents sought, among other things, to regulate the compound at its current location, but the state claimed that this was not possible due to the proximity to Highway 1.

The decision to evacuate Khan al-Ahmar provoked intense diplomatic tensions and caused harsh criticism from Israel by the European Union and the United Nations. Pato Bensuda, even issued a statement warning of the evacuation of the village, expressing concern that the evacuation could lead to violence. However, a few weeks later, a message arrived in The Hague from Israel stating that there was no impediment to evacuating Khan al-Ahmar.
